Where is the Level Horizon function in Mission Planner?

Hello All.

This is my first post in this forum so hopefully I get it right. I have built and flown a new Goblin 580 heli and I have been trying to go through the first flight tuning steps. Reading the docs it says I can use the ‘Level Horizon’ function to set my pitch/roll values. Either mission planner doesn’t have this function, or I am blind and maybe shouldn’t even be flying, ha-ha… Hopefully someone can help me with this. I have done the manual setting of pitch/roll, but an automated method would be nicer. Thank you in advance for your help. Forgot this part. I am using mission planner version 1.3.81.

Not sure where you are that but I suppose it’s the Setup>Accel Calibration screen you are referring to.

@Dave, I did use that section and did all three selections, but I wasn’t sure if there was some other hidden place with the ‘Level Horizon’ button. Maybe that button is in some other ground control software?

It’s in QGroundControl but I wouldn’t use that to setup and configure Arducopter.

@dkemxr , thanks for the info. I plan to stick with Mission Planner. As long as the two buttons do what is needed for ‘Level Horizon’ function I’m good with that. Have a great day Dave.

@hwurzburg Did you add this to the tradheli wiki in the hover trim section? I don’t remember writing this or maybe it came from Chris. Is this still correct? is it QGC only? Just wondering if there needs to be a wiki change.

@bnsgeyer no, you wrote it on 3/2022

Hmm. I guess I will have to research and see if that is still a valid technique. I don’t use QGC that much so if that functionality lives there then I am surprised I wrote it. Can you say whether that is a valid technique?
I’ll add that to my list of wiki revisions.

@bnsgeyer it would be a nice option to have it in mission planner. Otherwise I guess the wiki just needs an update. I would volunteer but I don’t feel I have enough experience currently to do that. Hopefully in the near’ish future I can.

Unless trad heli operates vastly differently than other AP branches, Mission Planner - Setup - Accel Calibration - Calibrate Level should do what is needed here.

I believe you are correct, and that is what I did, however, the wiki says otherwise. When you are new to all this software, flight controllers, mission planner, etc., it is very confusing to read how to do something, then spend lots of time trying to figure it out, only to find out that it doesn’t really exist, or work the way you were told.

Please don’t take my words the wrong way. What the Ardupilot and Mission Planner teams have done is extremely impressive, and I am very thankful for all the countless hours of work I know this has taken. As the new guy here I am just looking for clarification, and maybe an update to the docs for other new comers like myself.

So maybe just some clarification as the which button performs which function would help, i.e., which button sets Pitch, and which button sets Roll.

Again, thank you guys for your time invested in this project.

Seems to me the only correction would be in the Trade Heli Wiki replacing “Level Horizon” with “Calibrate Level” as it’s stated in the Copter Accelerometer Calibration Wiki.

Agree. There are not separate functions for roll and pitch, as seems the desire from the OP.

Place the vehicle level. Click the button. Done.

Thanks for clearing that up. I will get that changed in the wiki.

@Yuri_Rage , having separate pitch and roll buttons is not my request, but a question because there are two buttons besides the one for accel calibration.

Okay, so I just powered up my laptop and helicopter so I could look at the three buttons so I wasn’t going from memory, and now I understand the difference. So my bad for not comprehending this when I first posted my question.

However, now I have a new question(s). So the middle button says 1 axis/AHRS trims. So which axis does it adjust? Can you select a different axis? Then same questions for the bottom button.

Thanks guys.

It’s a little misleading I suppose. “Calibrate Level” is a single orientation that calibrates pitch/roll offsets. Unlike the top button, which requires you to rotate the vehicle through 6 orientations to fully calibrate the accelerometers (or the bottom button, which is a sort of shortcut for the top one if you can’t rotate the vehicle).

If you have already done the step for the top or bottom button, the center one allows you to adjust the level roll/pitch attitude with a set of offsets (like trim, but for accelerometer calibration), which seems to be the feature you are after.

This link that applies to other AP variants may help (and applies almost equally to Heli except for the discussion of fixed wing trim, but apparently the Heli section of the wiki differs in more than just that portion):

@Yuri_Rage , thank you for clearing this up. My understanding now is the center button is basically the ‘Level Horizon’ button as mentioned in the wiki. That works for me. Hopefully I can give this a try tomorrow.

I appreciate your help. Thank you and have a great night.

The top button set’s the scale factor and the offset for the accels. The middle button set’s the offsets only. The bottom button set’s the scale factors to default (1) and the offsets based on one position. In any case as @Yuri_Rage says you will finally push the middle button. Today the “Copter” Wiki would be most descriptive even with a Heli.

@dkemxr , excellent. Thank you for explaining the button functions. I will take a peek at the copter wiki too.

Have a great night.
