Newbie swimming up hill!

Hi Folks,

I am building my first Multirotor and have a big problem…

I am new to pixhawks and right now, I will say I got a clone! I know, I know… But I am on a budget so here I am…
Anyway, I connected it to my computer and into Mission Planner for the first time and pressed the connect button (top right) no problem, if I move the unit it did move the horizon on the HUD screen, vertical speed alt’ and so on… no problem there…

So, I started to set it up in “INITIAL SETUP”…I went to load the hexacopter firmware, it seems to go though the motions, asks me to unplug, press ok, and plug back in… I get a progress bar but then I got an error message saying "ERROR: Error uploading firmware"
Now it doesn’t even want to connect???

Can anyone please advise?

Powercycle the Pix and restart Mission Planner should do the trick. My MP sometimes just gets stuck.

When first loading the firmware you should not press connect. You can also try loading Ardu Planefirmware first and then load the multirotor again.

Thank you for the reply…
When you say “power cycle” How do I do that?
I did think about loading the previous settings (Quad) so I will give that a go tonight…

Thanks again.

David.

unplug any power to your pix and reconnect

Ok, I thought that’s what you meant…

Thanks…

Right… None of that worked…???

This can’t be because it’s a clone??? I think I read that it’s built in the same factory as the “real Pixhawk”???

When I power it up I get steady green lights on both PWRs, a steady red light on the B/E (IO side, a flashing blue light on the ACI (IO side) and a fast flashing red light on the FMU side…

I’ve also noticed two switches one each side of the unit one next to the TELEM 2 and the other next to the SERIAL 4/5 port…

What do they do?

Clone Pixhawks are not made in the same factory…

Say do you have the buzzer connected? What sounds do you get when you plug in the usb connection?

Also you may take out the SD card, swap it for another one or just format it again as FAT32, put it back in and see if that helps. Just make sure there is a card in before you power it up.

If this does not help push the button on the usb side while plugging in. Is the Flight Management reset button.

Ok, I’ll take that… I’m sure I did read it somewhere though???

I get no sound at all… I did when I 1st plugged it in but since I tried to load the firmware, it’s silent.

I will try the card… Should it be blank?

Ok, I just looked at the contents of the card…
It has one root file (APM) in there are two other files (LOGS and TERRAIN) There is nothing in LOGS but TERRAIN has 4 DAT files in it…

That looks correct. No logs are generated until the unit is armed for flight.

Mike

So, If I reformat the card, I’ll loose the data in the TERRAIN file?
And the file system?
Will the PIX re-write that lot?

Any idea what the DAT files are in TERRAIN?

Doesn´t matter if anything is on it. Format as FAT32 and see that it goes back in until it sits tight. I read about some other guys having trouble connecting to their pix and it seemed related to the card. But at least it gave them audible warnings and I remember mine, wich is a fixhawk pixhawk clone, gave me the creeps when the card wasn´t really in the slot.

Maybe you try pushing the button next t the usb after pluging in first and see if it lets you connect.

Ok, I formatted it and no change…???
I can’t see the card being a problem to fit as it goes into a socket/cage and clicks when home…

Do you mean the safety button???

Nope. The tiny reset button on the side of the unit where the usb is located.

and just one other thing that came to my mind: sometimes my Mission Planner forgets what Com port to use to connect to the pix. Especially when I switch between wireless und USB connection or when I click connect to early. If your computer makes that USB connection sound and the pix lights go on when you use USB, just check if you got the right COM port selected and the right connection speed next to the Connect button. Sometimes the PC might also assign a new COM port to a device when you use a different USB port than before.

Done all of that! Still no change…??? :frowning:
I think I have to let this one go… and pay more of my hard earned cash…

What clone is it and where you got it from? I have this saying “If you buy cheap, you buy twice”. Lessons learned  I tried to save cash by buying a non 3DR telemetry kit and never got it to work properly. Then I ordered the 3DR, pluged it in … bang. Came pre-programmed and worked out of the box.

I got the kit through the Bay of e’s…
ebay.co.uk/itm/Pixhawk-PX4-2 … 809wt_1154

The Telem’ has 3DR printed on the back of the boards so I’m not sure about those???
What speed should it be set to? I’ve just left it at the default???

I could try re-installing MP and start from scratch???

I can’t help thinking it’s something I’ve done wrong???

Should be at 57600. But I´m beginning to think you just caught a bad unit. Usually they come with no firmware on them and in your initial post you said you got some readings when first connected and then you went to install the firmware.

Do you get the USB connection sound from your computer when you plug it in?
