My drone only fly for a 1min before landing on it own

I am completely new to this ardupilot world. I have been trying to figure this out myself for the past 2 month. I cant seem to figure it out. The problem I am dealing with at the moment is. I finally got my drone to actually lift off. But only for a min until it started to land itself.

I first thought it was the battery ( 3s lipo battery 5200mah). I used a multi meter to test it by looking on Youtube. It seem fine but i have notice when I charge the battery it take a long time for it to charge. Which shows 11.1v I’m guess that the full charge limit.

Im not sure if i need to replace a new battery with 4s or if my setting in my parameter incorrect and it cause the drone to land early because of a safety reasons.

I would love to fly drone the air in order for me to add more stuff to it so i can continue my journey learning more with Mission Planner. QGC

Here is a list of what my drone has on it. Not sure it would make a difference but i figure this would help give more details about my situation

If i need to upload my parameter information on here. please tell me how i can do so. to give you a better picture of what is going on.

i have a S500 drone frame

920 kv motor
using a FlySky FS-i6 AFHDS 6CH Transmitter

A fully charged 3S battery is 12.6 v (4.2v/cell) So your battery probably isn’t fully charged and after take off it’s triggering the low voltage safety.

Get a proper LiPo battery charger and charger it to its full voltage.

And use ArduPilot Methodic Configurator → Quick start guide to configure it correctly so that it does not do it again.

Building with 4S would have been a better choice.

I would leave the battery charging for hours because it take forever. I might have to get a new battery instead.

I would have to look into Methodic Configurator. Thanks

I think your right. I might have to get a 4s battery. I saw another forum talking about replacing the battery from 3s to a 4s. how many mins of flying can i get from a 4s battery ? What setting should i put on the fail safe ?

Carefully read section 1.1 of the documented I posted before.

Plug the numbers into eCalc and find out. Battery FS varies from user to user but 3.4V/cell is a good place to start if it’s just normal local flying. Some may suggest higher. But, monitor consumed mah also.

It sounds to me like you don’t have the proper charger. And going to 4S is only going to make it worse. I agree with the other comments that you likely need to switch to 4S, but I also think you should upgrade your charger to a proper lipo balance charger that is rated appropriately for your battery.

thanks for that. i didnt know about this. this would be very helpful for me down the road

I just bought a 4s let see what happens this way i can test it with the lip charger i have now. if doesnt charge then i would need to get a new charger.

Just curious why do you think 4s would make it worse ?

What charger?

If your current charger is taking hours to charge a 3S battery, it’s going to take more hours to charge the 4S because it’s probably already at it’s wattage limit. 4S will likely need more watts, therefore, more hours.

the charger to charge the lipo battery

How many like 2 to 3 hours on average?

When I charge my lipo the first time. I had it charging for more then 6 hours. I would look it and it would be at 9.5 then it would go to 10.5 on the 5th hour. So I would disconnect just because i got tired of charging it.

If you have the correct charger for your battery it should be able to charge at 1C or the capacity of the battery. For a 5200mah battery the charge would ideally be able to charge at 5.2 amps. This would mean the battery is charged in about 1 hour. It’s not going to hurt the battery to charge it slower, but like you say it takes forever and you’re going to be working your charger at it’s maximum. Quick math suggests to me your charger is putting out about 0.5amps. If anything you’re likely to be burning out your charger.

@gabe86 This should be properly answered. What model is your charger? Using a wrong or faulty charger can burn your house down. LiPos are a fire hazard and should be properly charged, properly discharged and properly stored.
