Autonomous bird project

I am working on a project to create an autonomous bird/drone which at random time intervals autonomously flies straight up into the air, hovers for a minute and then returns to ground. Would ArduPilot be a good software for this task? I have never used ArduPilot before, how complicated of a task would this be?

Yes, that is possible and very simple to do with ArduCopter

Thanks for the help. Do you have any recommendations on flight controllers which would be suitable for this project? Iā€™m not too fussed about precision just something cheap which can do the job would be best.
