Worm drive for steering

is the current ArduBoat software compatible with worm drive steering systems?

Actually they are much more durable and offer higher torque values than comparably priced servo motors and have already been tested for rudder control.
They usually employ a brushless motor with an output line giving speed readings, but don’t have a positional feedback, which can be implemented using a rotary encoder.
I guess with a little hacking the actual servo-based steering can be updated to support worm drive too.

This questions came up recently in this other discussion. I think the answer is we don’t support it at the moment but it’s possible. The first step is to raise an enhancement request in the issues list.

Some developer would have to be interested in taking this on. I’m happy to give advice on how to do it, it’s not particularly hard I think.
