What is the "tube" at the top of the flight data screen for?

What is the opaque “tube” with a yellow end at the top of the flight data map screen for?

It seems to flicker off and on.

@Buzzme,
I believe that the moving bar is a Mission Progress indicator when in the Auto Mode.
