Using Solo Gimbal in an another copter or a handheld application

I see the price drop of solo gimbal to $40!

Has anyone tried to power the gimbal externally (not from solo), and use it in other copters or a handheld application. I’ve been googling in most forums and this has been asked few times, but there are no good answer for this. I’ve read it uses MAVLink for the communication as well.

I’m sure it is possible, but don’t know how to start, any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you

I asked the same thing. The problem is that the gimbal attaches to a special interface that was written by GoPro that controls the camera and that unit is not open source. The second problem is it only really mounts in a Solo.

So if you could find a supplier for that interface and used some duck tape your good to go…

@Mike
Thanks a lot for the reply.
I see this information in Solo website.

So if I understand correctly,
Gimbal is connected via,
Pin1 - VCC Battery
Pin3 - GND (Gimbal)
Pin5 - Gimbal Rx
Pin6 - Gimbal Tx

Camera is connected via,
Pin2 - VCC 5V
Pin4 - GND (USB)
Pin7 - USB D+
Pin8 - USB D-

Just curious, what are those 4 pins to gimbal? A USB interface as well?

Right, the GoPro is controlled through the USB interface as well as the video out. The code to run the Gimbal I believe is already in the Pixhawk software.
