Is it possible to use an external GPS/magnetometer that includes the HDT sentence for heading?
I understand that the serial ports accept nmea GPS but I am unclear whether nmea data can be used for heading as well.

At this time, I’m afraid we don’t accept a heading from the GPS even if it’s a pair of RTK GPSs that can provide such info (no single GPS can know this info I think). It’s certainly possible to add at some point but it’s not there at the moment. I can’t really promise when we’d add the feature 'cuz it depends upon one of the developers becoming interested in adding it (@wicked_shell would be the most obviously qualified developer but others could do it as well) or a company steps forward to fund the effort. Knowing when either of those will happen is hard to guess.
