I started with Arducopter last November and I can’t express how impressed I am with the software, tools, and community. I’ve build out three quadcopters and two are flying very well (the first is on the bottom of my pond due to a faulty blade). I’ve been able to get all of my hardware running using the documentation and in a few cases the discussions.
The support is so good, it’s hard to believe this is open source.
