RangeFinder over snow

Hi Everyone,
has anyone experience with RangeFinders over snow? Is an optical or a acoustical sensor better in this case?

I currently have a MB1240 which I am struggling to connect to a Raspberry Pi for test purposes (apparently Maxbotix uses non standard UART). Even if I get it to work though, I don’t really have much snow available here ATM. So I thought maybe someone already has experience in this area and can share some insights?

Thanks

Very fluffy snow absorb a lot of the sound, icy crust is perfect.
Lidar should work fine.

I agree with Andre-K, a LiDAR will be a better solution. SF11/C or LW20.
