Pixhawk and RFD900 sticking in bootloader

Now the Pixhawk supports cts, we can hook up all the 6 wires to our modems. I thought that was great when I went to swap out my 3DR radio for a RFD900 (our mapping hex is going over a km so we need the extended range). Not so great. CTS goes low on powering up and leaves the radio in bootloader. You have to literally unplug the external bec from the modem and then plug it back in to power up properly. Supposedly if I put the 5v jumper back on the radio, ditch the bec and power the radio from the telemport1 it will be fine. But that’s a lot of power being fed through the telem port. Is there a fix for this? I guess there isn’t a lot of people using this radio.

Would it be ok to power off the tem1 port with the radio set to 20 instead of full throttle at 30? Or is there a chance of the Pixhawk browning out? Got a huge area to map tomorrow with limited access, so it would be awesome if this would work.

I have been using the RFD900 modems for over a year now on the APM2.5. I just recently put one on a pixhawk I have established comms but haven’t flown with it yet. I can’t imagine this thing would brownout the pixhawk over a APM. As far as wiring goes I just used the wiring diagram from the below link.
