I’m wondering if there is any work on ethernet communications between sensors? The manufacturing controls industry has pretty much gone that way as a standard.

ROS2 will use extensively real time Ethernet between different Nodes.
As for sensors, the trend is toward CANBUS and a particular implementation called UAVCAN.
