Continuous Rotation vs. Position Servos

Which works better, CR or position type servos. I have both but the position servos don’t have enough travel and the CRs don’t seem to move at all.

Are you using a servo tester?

As you likely know, either kind may be used. Often gears may be used to increase the amount of rotation (of position type servos) at the cost of reduced torque.

Are you building the tracker yourself, or are you using a kit of some kind?

I don’t know anything about Tracker but many continuous rotation servos are speed controlled with input not position. So, if you want your Tracker to have a controlled rotation like a Radar antenna than that’s for you :grinning:

Tracker uses its attitude and compass for orientation with continuous servos

Shows what I know! Thanks for the information.

I built the gimbal from a kit I found online. Nice, light weight. Made from ABS plastic so its actually strong. I’ll try and come up with a picture of it. Looks cool and worked well for the Vector system I built it for. I like the design and have adapted it for an Arducopter AAT… Just need to work out a few details, (like getting it to work right.

When you said your CR servo didn’t move, I was wondering how you determined this.

If you don’t have a servo tester, you should get a few.

These sorts of testers are a good sanity check to make sure your servos are behaving as expected. You can find them on Aliexpress for less than $2.

Some LiPo charges include a servo tester feature. My ToolkitRC M8 charger includes an Output option which includes a servo tester.

I haven’t built an antenna tracker myself. I was just suggesting a trouble shooting tool I use in many of my projects. A servo tester could be used to verify your CR servo works as expected.

If the CR servo behaves as expected with a tester, then the problem could be narrowed down a bit.

The servos work fine, They rotate smoothly with a tester. When I power them through the FC on th antenna tracker they hum but don’t move when I hit the test button in Mission Planner.
