One could do a calibration followed by compassmot or the reverse order. Which is correct (or best suited)?

Compass first, compassmot after.
That is right. While calibrating the compass is mandatory, compassmot is not as they do diferent things. Compassmot is useful to check the magnetic interference in the compass usually provoked by the motors. That’s why we carry the external GPS with compass away from motors on a stick antenna. In this way compassmot will give you little interference. What is really interesting is to make a compassmot on the internal compass, I mean rhe compass in the FC. This is what is really usefull to know.
