I was reading up on terrain following and was wondering if I can preload the files from the web utility onto the SD card without having to remove the card from the stack? In my case it is bit of a PITA to remove it and requires to take the stack apart.
Is there a “mass storage mode” like in BetaFlight?

I don’t think so.
You could use microSD card extender to move the card to a more accessible location though it comes with its own downsides as it introduced another failure point.
Or you could use MavFTP to move the files to the SD card, it will be a bit slower than mass storage mode as there is MAVLink overhead.
