Best Connection for DroneKit + APM Planner (Intel Nuc)

I am new to the Ardu Pilot world. While flying the a copter with APM Planner2 on Ubuntu, I would also like to have an Intel Nuc with a DroneKit connection to query for flight parameters to construct some metadata along for some other business logic.

It seems the best way to do this is just with a serial to USB connection and connect the Nuc to telemetry 2 (while AMP will connect via telemetry 1.

Does this seem like the best option/does anyone recommend a better option?

That sounds the best way.
