I think the distance could appear as both a DISTANCE_SENSOR and RANGEFINDER message. From my point of view the distance-sensor message is the better message because it has a lot more detail of the source, min/max range, etc.

Maybe try looking for both using the mavlink inspector that is built into MP? (QGC has one as well).

Thanks again. Never figured out the simulator. Triggered the messages instead by putting a boat with transducer on top of a large water bucket in the kitchen. And now successfully retrieve the distance_sensor messages.
Using this message and wiring up multiple sensors in the boat, there will be one distance_sensor message for each?

Yes, I think you’ll get one DISTANCE_SENSOR message per sensor.
