Plane crashed at auto take-off

Hello everyone,

I tried to do an auto take-off by hand launch last Saturday but it ended to a hard crash when the plane tried to reach the sky.

My plane setup:

Kit: nano talon (AUW: around 500g or less)

FC: Matek F405 using arduplane firmware 3.9.8 with airspeed sensor

No FPV equipments or camera, just a 900mhz telemetry onboard.

Actually the plane successfully finished a waypoint mission the previous weekend with manual hand launch. The log file as follows (https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjRNNKW2S9ZBlOdhweUq4gSa66F_pQ) So I don’t think there were any problems with the plane and its parameters.

I had follow this tutorial (http://ardupilot.org/plane/docs/automatic-takeoff.html) to active auto take-off function. Four parameters were changed (TKOFF_THR_MINACC, TKOFF_THR_DELAY, TKOFF_THR_MINSPD, TECS_PITCH_MAX) and I used mostly the recommend values.

My procedure for auto take-off that day was:

  • Turned on the TX

  • Plug in the battery

  • Connected the plane with Qgroundcontrol on a phone

  • Uploaded the mission

  • Armed the plane and switched to AUTO mode (I headed the plane to takeoff direction before switch to AUTO mode)

  • The first auto take-off was unsuccessful because my hand launch was a little weak and the plane hit some high grass and fell down after the engine had started in the air. Emergency stop notification appeared on the GS screen. I disarmed the plane and checked its condition. No damage and all the control surfaces were good. I decided to do another auto take-off attempt (maybe my mistake here)

  • I chose a higher place to do the take-off. Armed the plane again. Switch to AUTO mode again (I might forget about the direction before switching to AUTO mode this time but I read somewhere that this procedure is not need anymore https://github.com/ArduPilot/ardupilot/issues/4071 )

  • Did another take-off attempt with stronger launch force. The engine automatically started and the plane started to climb up with level state.

  • Suddenly the plane started to roll left and I thought the plane tried to reach the first waypoint. But it continued to roll left (I saw the roll was up to 90 degrees or more) and the plane turn left in high speed before losing altitude and hit straight to the ground.

  • When I checked the left-over of the plane, the ailerons control surface were still in turning left state. The flight controller was mounted solidly on the frame.

The log file and parameters as follows (https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjRNNKW2S9ZBlOdiJZHTynniLkN9IQ )

Could you guys check the log and help me to find out about potential causes of the accident, please?

Thanks in advance.
