Plane crash - Probable servo failure. ChibiOS message in flight-log?

Hello,

I experienced a crash which i supect may have been caused by a servo fail - however i supsect also it may be a power issue in general, as the message “ChibiOS” and “Arduplane V4.5.7” is printed multiple times in the flight-log as if the autopilot (Cube Orange +) is rebooting mid-flight.

Any ideas?

The log is continuous so I don’t think the board is rebooting. Did you have a GCS or any telemetry connected? If that drops its connection and re-establishes that can sometimes trigger those messages.

The only power related thing I see is a big spike in current at the end. It lines up directly with the motor command so that motor was running full power.

Hi MarkusL,

@Allister has already written why it is not a reboot.

I am very sure, as you yourself suspected, that a servo failure led to the crash:

You can clearly see that, from the point marked ‘A’ onwards, the target roll and actual roll suddenly diverge, and at the same time the ailerons are running in maximum position without anything changing. (At ‘B’ you can clearly see the normal roll response when the ailerons are intact).

You have two aileron servos, only one of which is defective. The position of the defective rudder and the correction of the functioning aileron servo on the other side ‘stabilised’ the roll to about 100 degrees, which of course had to lead to a crash.

If the servo had failed in the centre position, the other aileron on the opposite side might still have had enough authority to control the roll.

I hope not too much was broken.
