I’ve mounted my Pixhawk 180deg from the front , I.e. pointing rear, what orientation do I fit the external gps\compass, pointing front or rear ?

You can mount it any way you like as there are separate parameters for FC and compass. If you set them right you will have zero problems both way.
I have a build set up this way, Pixhawk points to the rear, compass points to the front. Set AHRS_ORIENTATION to 4 (Yaw180). Works perfectly normal
