MicoAir MTF-xx sensors

Hi all, I’m trying to sort out a bit of a mystery and would love any help/testing that others can do. I have a MicoAir MTF-01 optical/flow rangefinder MTF-01 - Optical&Range Sensor - MicoAir Tech that I am working on setting up on a X500 copter. What I would like to do with this (classroom setting) is use the sensor as a downward facing rangefinder/optical flow sensor first, fly that, etc. and then rotate it to be forward facing, disable flow and enable the rangefinder as a proximity sensor for some basic obstacle avoidance.

I have used the Benewake TF-Luna as a forward facing prox sensor like this in the past. This is all proof-of-concept type work to help students learn about configuring different sensors/peripherals in Ardupilot.
However, it seems that although the MicoAir MTF outputs data just fine both from the optical flow and rangefinder when facing down, when I disable flow and attempt to change the RNGFND orientation parameter as we as enabling the PRX_ param, I get no data and consistent PRX warnings, exactly like this post Micoair MTF-01 Flow + LIDAR as Proximity Sensor - #3 by telamechanica . I can’t really find any other examples of someone trying to do what I’m trying, however.

I didn’t want to resurrect that older thread, but wanted to ask if anyone else can confirm that the PRX errors also happen to them when the attempt to configure the sensor in this way? Does that point to a hardware issue with the MicoAir, or is something else going on?
