Micoair configurator

Just saw some news on discord:

MicoAir introduced some new setup tool for ardupilot: MicoConfigurator — A Modern and Friendly Setup Tool for ArduPilot

It has some issues but first impression is really good.

Would that be a competition for AMC?

This is a GCS much like the couple of new GCSs that has popped up recently. I don’t see how this is going to replace AMC.
One nice thing about this is that Firefox Webserial works

Replace? Probably not, but it looks like it has some configuration steps automated like motors setup and detection assignment during motors test and some friendly sensors setup. Not the tuning phase, but general setup of the ardupilot.

Ah, didn’t see that. That is a nice quality-of-life feature I guess

I gave the web version a try, and it just screw up my internal and external compass. i have to use the MP to fix it.

Interesting. I just check and my compass internal and external seems to be OK. What it did exactly? I need to check my before flying now

Compass external becomes 0, compass id changed.

Isn’t compass ID something populated by ardupilot? not set by MP or any GCS?

Yes, you are correct. I fix it in MP by checking use compass 2, reboot and check the order again after boot and uncheck use compass 2 (old configuration).

This is a very different software. It does not have:

  1. A clearly defined sequence of steps to correctly and efficiently configure your vehicle from scratch/unconfigured to ready for productive operation.
  2. Traceability. One year later you will have no way of knowing why you chose the values you set.

I like the GUI. And it feels easy to use, but it is also easier to make mistakes. It does have a “setup guide” that is nice, and I’m sure they will improve and extend it.

AMC might feel harder to use, but it is also harder to make mistakes.

Anyway, It makes the ArduPilot ecosystem richer and it’s one more option for the users.

1 - true, 2 - also true, but….

not everyone needs that. nice GUI, easy setup to get hardware configured, do some basic steps - like mentioned motors configuration, and that might be the key to success for this one. IMO looks a bit more user friendly than MP and AMC.

For sure not a replacement for AMC, but I would say a bit of competition in basic setup.

Almost a decade ago, Michael Oborne was going to make Mission Planner more like a QGroundControl, but that project never took any shape. I am much more comfortable with MP despite at times the documentation explaination is bit difficult to interpert.

I have two MicoAir FC on small freestyle quads which I can hookup and see what lights up in this configurator.

Just checked that out. Gotta say, I’m impressed. If for nothing else but the motor test and auto-mapping.

I just hookedup MicoAir F405 to the configurator. It is indeed impressive, spacially checkout the Charts option which almost like a logviewer in realtime. I bet with telemetry radio you can watch all the sensors in realtime during flight.

I wish I had bought F743 when it was only selling for $39 AIO. Spacially it has dedicated UART to hookup Pi.

This tool does not require micoair FC to work. Seems can be used with all ardupilot FCs.

Yeah I tried it with a Flywoo that was handy and it worked nicely.

log download speed… slightly better than MP.
