I have been assuming, (ya I know) that the Large Vehicle calibration of the magnetometer adjusts the values in the offsets. But perhaps it just overwrites them based on an internal model of the magnetic field at your location? My question is: Is there any value in doing a magnetometer dance if you are going to tune your heading later with the Large Vehicle Calibration? I have Magfit when I get flight data, and that sounds like a great idea as long as EMI is not overwhelming the SNR of the magnetic field you want to measure, but it would be nice to have a baseline before using other tools if possible. So this question is limited to … what does the large vehicle calibration do to existing offsets? Any insights about large vehicle calibration are definitely appreciated.
Large vehicle calibration is a sort of last resort method to get some sort of compass offsets when the “dance” is impractical. It will overwrite existing offsets.
Accomplishing the “dance” and then following it up with a large vehicle calibration is fairly pointless unless the first calibration was really bad due to interference at the time.
In almost all cases, you are usually best served by accomplishing a basic calibration followed by MagFit.
Thanks Yuri. The help is appreciated.
