I’ve attached a log, if anyone feels like having a look and pointing out some of my problems I’d appreciate the help!
I’ve had a few hover attempts now with a tri tilt-rotor plane, and am trying to sort issues out.
This test, I did a Qtune for yaw, and it finished (although I don’t know if I remember to save it correctly)
I had no pitch control from the stick. Not sure whats going on there. I did have this working on my previous test hovers.
The biggest issue, is I had a second large “failure” towards the end of testing, where it appeared the rear motor dropped out and the plane flipped on its back from a few feet up. This same issue occurred on my first successful hover as well- towards the end of testing, from a bit higher up, the rear seemed to cut out briefly, it almost corrected from it, but had a rough landing. I am hovering a large VTOL for a good bit of time, so I wonder if this is a heat issue, or even a low battery situation.
I’m not setup yet to monitor current properly. This flight I’m trying to sort out the battery usesage and get an idea of what I need to do to correct the scaling. i imagine this will take me several flight attempts to get useable results.
I’m seeing the same kind of uncertainty when reviewing VTOL logs, especially when a motor appears to drop out late in a hover. The pitch-control symptom and rear-motor event make the attached log details particularly useful for separating a control-input issue from power or thermal behavior.
There’s no ESC data so can’t say for sure, but I’d agree that a thermal limit could be an issue. Check the ESC temperature settings to make sure they are turned off, or really high. If that’s already the case, you may have cooked the ESC. Even if it’s working on the bench you should consider replacing it because in my experience it will fail again. Especially hovering VTOLs. I’d also rule out mechanical issues with the wiring and power to the rear ESC.
Since this log, I’ve been able to scale my current properly and confirm, and its actually a bit less than I would have guessed- 27-30 amps at hover with a AUW of 2.8Kg. I’m not really pushing the limits of the ESC (4in1, 65amp continuous rating), but, with no airflow, I assume its running hot. And, since the 2 occurrences of this have only happened towards the end of a (small) battery, I was guessing possibly heat. I do have a 140c cutoff limit, but, from my understanding, its supposed to limit throttle, and not cut.
I should have telemetry from the esc, I just need to figure out how to monitor it.
There’s a sustained 150 watts running in that system. I know, not all that energy is converted to heat, but a lot is. A lot of ESC ratings have a little * that mentions the rating only applies with proper cooling.
I use MavExplorer to look at logs. Maybe not the most user friendly in the beginning but once you get the hang of it, it’s really powerful.
