Going to buy a new radio, but I want to be sure about some features

Hi all,
I need to take apart my old 35Mhz radio and switch to modern one to fly with both old style RC planes and do advanced experiments with Arduplane.

After some research, I’m oriented to buy something with the ExpressLRS system, with

I found interesting the following products:

My question is: Can I accomplish all the functionalities I wrote above with both?
Do you have any other advice for transmitters with similar features?

Thanks!

Unfortunately right now you can either have GCS telemetry or Yaapu’s telemetry not both though generating Yaapu’s custom telemetry on TX is being worked on. It is a limitation of ELRS and Yaapu’s script.

I will just add that the Radiomaster TX16S is a great radio regardless of the feature set you end up with.

I see. So I can’t have both at the same time. It’s not a too bad thing however.

I’m seeing now that Jumper T15 seems not based on openTX, so I think it can’t even run Yaapu script. Is it correct?

OpenTx is old news, it’s all EdgeTx now. And, that Jumper Radio is supported but I would go with Radiomaster anyway.

You need to be aware of a couple of things.

  1. Frequency Band: 2.4Ghz is used on internal ELRS modules, range needs power and LBT for example is limited to 100mW. 868/915mHz has more range with the same power and up to now, LBT software does not limit the power output, means you can have 1000mW but only on an external module. There are cross-band radios that can do both but they come with their own problems.
  2. The chipset used on the radios can cause compatibility issues. Crossband based on LR1121 is only partly compatible with SX1280 on 2G4 and SX1272 on 868/915M.
  3. The famous 6-position switch for flight modes. Only full size radios come with it, others need some tricks.
  4. Size and Package: You can have a traditional radio with the screen at the bottom which is shadowed by your neck strap eventually. There are half-size radios and game-controller alike radios which under the hood are one and the same electronics. RM Boxer / RM TX12 / RM Zorro. Choose based on what you fly and how heavy the radio may be!

Apart from that, the yaapu issue is worked on, according to rumors

Thanks both,
I live in Italy, so I can go only with 2.4GHz.
I definitely need the 6 switches. I already did too many tricks to change flight mode with my old 35Mhz Graupner MX12

I just read the Jumper-t16 manual and also that one runs EdgeTX.

@dkemxr why you would recommend the Radiomaster T16s? You just love it or you see weakness with the Jumper T15?

I forgot to mention another important criteria. WIFI and USB connection to GCS / MissionPlanner.

You can only use WIFI with internal ELRS modules which typically causes issues with MS Windows 10.
The USB on the radio does not connect to the ELRS module’s telemetry because the radio does not know the mavlink protocol, only crossfire.

And 868Mhz is legal in all of EU afaik.

I do love it and I admit to not have personal experience with Jumper. Based on posts on the forum here I would say Radiomaster is a favorite but that’s just anecdotal.

I for sure like EdgeTx, and OpenTx before that on a Frsky radio, so perhaps it’s personal preference after that. I came from Spectrum and was very happy when the last of that was replaced!

I read of people fighting with Microsoft Defender to get data through the backpack.
The unavailability of usb connection with internal ELRF module is written also on the ExpressLRS Mavlink webpage. I was aware of it.
So, at the end I’ll try to use the wifi, if doesn’t work I’ll then switch to an external module and use the usb cable…
If it doesn’t work again I’ll switch back to the old two transceivers method

Thanks again

Good luck. I went for a TX12MK2 in 2023 because I wanted a half-size radio with JR Bay but with today’s knowledge I would go for a gamepad-alike Zorro because the switches are easier to find when flying with goggles.

Finally bought the Radiomaster Tx16s mark-II with two receivers:

Tx 16s is a good radio .
