The part I was missing was contained in this video - which explains how to configure the module. Increasing the baud rate from the default 9600 to 57600 did the trick for me.
There were a couple of weird details in the process. If there’s any interest, I’ll write a more lengthy explanation of how I did it - and what I was doing wrong.
