[Feature Request]: Dedicated "Pre-Flight Safety Profile" Configuration Page on Mission Planner

1) Problem Statement

Currently, setting critical flight safety and mission limits (like Geofence altitude, RTL behavior, and failsafes) requires navigating through multiple different menus—such as the Standard Params, Extended Tuning, or through the Full Parameter List. Because these settings are scattered, it is easy to accidentally skip a crucial safety check during pre-flight setups, especially when switching between different fields or operational environments.

2) Proposed Solution

I recommend creating a dedicated, single-page UI view in Mission Planner (potentially under Setup > Mandatory Hardware or as a tab in the Flight Plan screen) called the Pre-Flight Safety Dashboard.

This page would aggregate the most critical, environment-specific safety variables into one scannable checklist before takeoff. The page should include fields for:

  • Geofence Limits:
    • FENCE_ALT_MAX (Fence Max Altitude)
  • Mission Speed:
    • WPNAV_SPEED (Waypoint Navigation Speed)
  • Return-to-Launch (RTL) Configurations:
    • RTL_ALT (RTL Altitude)
    • RTL_OPTIONS (Bitmask options for RTL behavior)
  • Battery Failsafes:
    • Low Battery voltage/capacity thresholds (BATT_LOW_VOLT / BATT_LOW_MAH)
    • Low Battery failsafe action (BATT_FS_LOW_ACT)
  • Link Failsafes:
    • RC Link loss timeout and action (FS_THR_ENABLE / FS_OPTIONS)
    • GCS Link loss timeout and action (FS_GCS_ENABLE)

3) User Interface Concept

Instead of searching through parameter trees, the user would see a clean, organized dashboard. Each parameter would have a simple dropdown menu or text entry box alongside its unit (meters, m/s, volts). A single “Write Safety Parameters” button at the bottom would commit all changes to the flight controller at once.

4) Value to the Community

  • Enhanced Safety: Reduces human error by acting as a visual pre-flight checklist for critical parameters.
  • Efficiency: Drastically speeds up field setup times when commercial operators need to quickly adjust speeds or fence heights based on local airspace regulations.
  • Beginner Friendly: Makes vital safety settings obvious to newer pilots who might otherwise be intimidated by the Full Parameter List.

AMC already contains this in a step called “safety”

Preferably having it on Mission planner creates a more seamless work flow instead of switching apps

Yes, that is true.

I don’t know how similar the codebases are but perhaps bundling AMC with mission planning could be a decent choice although it does add unnecessary complexity and makes the app heavier, but could introduce AMC to many other users who aren’t on the forum or are beginners, who often just use MP. If it comes with it most likely they will notice it which will make it easier for them and removes the need for managing two software.

That is a good idea, but extremely hard to implement, MP is written in C# and AMC is written in Python.

AMC has been under fast-paced development for almost 3 years, and does a software release roughly once per week. That is a lot of code to port.

The good news is that both are open source; and AI nowadays can do wonders. So who knows.

For my part, AMC will continue to be a configuration-only tool. I still use MP, but only for operating the vehicle, not for configuring it.

Yeah then it’s gonna be challenge but there could be another tab there in MP for the AMC, but considering how frequently AMC is getting updated then it’s gonna be a challenge because for most users it would be annoying to have to like update every some days.

I don’t know if this is possible but perhaps doing it like a seperate exe with pyinstaller and then linking it so like there is a button on top which if you click it opens up that in a windowed mode inside Mission Planner

Could work but I don’t think something the devs would prefer to have

Create this yourself with a Plugin. This one took 10 minutes to create. Added to the Right Click menu in the HUD.

Thanks so much! That’s an amazing Solution!

Very easy to accomplish too. All I did was prompt an LLM with your post verbatim except item 4) and told it to provide a plugin for Mission Planner. A couple of bug iterations and the basic structure was working. Added it as a right click menu item and then added the profile save/load. You can see it needs more work but that’s just the standard tweaking these code generators need. You can do a lot with Plugins!

Hi Dave,

By any chance could you share the .cs file contents that you have created?

I tried, but failed to develop a successful plugin.

Hope you can help, thanks!

OK, attached. Past it into the plugin directory.
PreFlightSafetyDashboard_v1_7.zip (5.8 KB)

If you want to work on this further upload the plugin file to your LLM and prompt it with what you want changed. It might first have to know what version of Ardupilot you are using. This is for Arducopter V4.7.1 current Stable.

Thanks very much! Works like a charm!
