ESC to small for my motor?

I was recently told (by an online reseller) that a certain 45amp esc was to small for the motor that I am using.
the quad only uses 20amp total, so 5 amps per esc well below the rating at hover. The most I have ever seen was 60 amps total during flight. Is there something else that factors into this?

No. Unless the ESC the reseller is offering is a piece of shit that look like these:
ESC

What motor, what ESC?

45amp single esc holybro tekko with blheli32 version 32.9 with a sunnysky 6215 motor.

80A ESC recommended, if that is the motor…

Well yea, if all the reseller knows is it’s a Sunnysky 6215 they likely would suggest a larger capacity ESC. You make the call based on the actual use case.

Yeah, limiting factor is what the propeller can cause in AMPs and what the Battery can provide in between all motors.

You may want to check what current the ESC reports via telemetry. It has a current sensor and should report via bi-directional dshot and KISS telemetry via UART.

Max I have seen per esc is 12-15.

I guess my question is yes the 80amp esc is better because it will allow more amps through it, but there is no secret sauce that makes the 80amp turn a bigger motor better at 15amps right?

I have this as a slow flyer, max I have and will push it is 60amps (15per motor) if I decide to hot rod it then I’ll upgrade the esc’s. Typical flying is 7-8amps per motor.

So you have the answer.

The main difference will be the heat generated at those power levels, most racing quad Escs are rated with the assumption that it’s on a high speed aircraft with high speed airflow on it. Not a large heavy craft hovering, so using a larger esc will compensate for the lower airflow as the larger ESC has lower resistance.

That ESC also reports temperature via telemetry. Keep it under 50degC and you’re good.
30% load is nothing for that ESC. The PCB is 3 millimeters thick if I’m not mistaken. I have them on a 5" Diatone TyrantS from 2017 with Turnigy 2206 Viking Motors as a tech demo for AM32.
