Copter Twitch during Loiter then RC Controller Ignored and Wont Let Drone Disarm

Hello everyone, I have been running into numerous issues since the following events occurred:

  1. Bought and installed new ESCs, motors, and a higher mAH LiPo.
  2. During this effort, I crashed the drone (the classic flip over before takeoff).
  3. Fixed that issue, re-set inital tune values via Mission Planner.
  4. Re-calibrated compass
  5. ESC calibration

Flight #1: I noticed that the copter was twitching every couple of seconds or so. A twitch that was bad enough to almost de-stabilize the drone.

Flight #2: This was when the drone decided to have a mind of its own. It completely ignored my RC controller inputs after I armed it. Then, randomly after changing the flight mode, it attempted to take off but I tried to force crash it with the controller and it seemd to work. I disarmed the drone with the controller then walked over it to remove the battery and it randomly armed and the props actually hit my arm!
I noticed in Flight 1 that the RC protocol was SBUS (that is good) but then in the second I see that RC protocol was DSM?? Do I have a bad RC receiver on the drone??

I am really concerned with this build of mine. It used to be so stable and I was so confident flying it, I am unsure where to even go after I performed all of these calibrations etc.

Also, here is my configuration:
copter.param (19.2 KB)

Any help is much appreciated! I will update this thread as needed as I am still working on de-bugging this on my end.

A similar issue that was posted a couple of years back, but it had no resolution:

Looks like a lot of default parameters and some random Rate PID changes. Post a link to a .bin flight log but you need to follow a basic tuning process.

Thank you Dave. The “Flight 1” and “Flight #2” are hyperlinks to the .bin files. So do you think the events are unrelated? I have not had a problem like this with the default tune params in the past.

I see, missed that Angelo!

OMG, I think I might know the problem. Wow this is embarrassing. When I threaded the cable through the frame from the receiver to the FC port, I managed to pinch the cable between the drone’s arm and the top plate.

This could potentially have been the issue??

Well, maybe.

The 1st log shows a very poor tune so you need to follow a basic tuning process. Either the Methodic Configurator or follow the process thru the Wiki tuning guides.

I will attempt to tune the drone. I just need to figure out why it is arming and throttling without me doing anything with the RC controller. The drone has a mind of its own at this point! I am going to replace the receiver first. I thought the pinched cable would do it but the drone still ignored most of my RC commands. Of course, I take the props off and try and re-create, could not get it to do it again which leads me to think the receiver is doing some weird things.

I will post an update once I install the new receiver and can at least get the drone off the ground properly.

UPDATE

Replacing the receiver fixed my issue where the drone had a mind of its own and would arm without me even touching the RC controller.

I dont consider this to be a tuning issue. Check out the plot below. Notice how RATE.R randomly kicks up without any rhyme or reason (at least in the plot).

This issue occurs in all flight modes. Going to do a full tune. Maybe I am wrong!

One more update because I dont like forum OPs that post about a problem, the OP fixes it, then never provides that closing update. Rant is over…

It was the darn ESCs, I knew it! I have seen the result of a poor tune and this phenomena was definitely not that. When controlling the drone, it had no problem responding to my aggressive roll/pitch manuevers but every now and then, a quick twitch.

Replaced the ESCs and she works beautifully. Now there is one unknown. I re-soldered, so there is a possibility it wasnt the ESC but the connection to the ESC. I dont care enough to investigate further LOL.

Good work, and thanks for updating - everyone appreciates that.
