Beginner Help: Uploading ArduPilot to a SpeedyBee Flight Controller and Using QGroundControl

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty new to flight controllers and ArduPilot, and I’m trying to learn how to set up a SpeedyBee flight controller with ArduPilot and QGroundControl.

I’m currently looking for a good beginner-friendly guide or tutorial that explains how to:

  1. Upload/install ArduPilot firmware onto a SpeedyBee flight controller

  2. Configure the flight controller after installing the firmware

  3. Connect the flight controller to QGroundControl

  4. Control/configure the vehicle through QGroundControl

  5. Make sure the SpeedyBee hardware is properly configured for ArduPilot

I have found quite a few DIY websites and YouTube tutorials, but I’m having trouble following many of them because they assume you already know a lot about flight controllers. I’m not very familiar with these things yet, so I’m looking for something that explains the process from the beginning.

Our setup is a SpeedyBee flight controller + ArduPilot + QGroundControl, so ideally I would love a tutorial that uses these three platforms together. If there isn’t one that covers all three, tutorials covering two of them would also be really helpful.

If anyone has experience setting up ArduPilot on a SpeedyBee FC, I would really appreciate any recommendations for guides, videos, documentation, or advice on what order I should do everything in.

Thank you so much for any help! I’m just trying to get a better understanding of the setup before I start changing anything on the flight controller.

QGroundControl is a ground control station. It’s main objective is not correctly configuring the vehicle. It’s main focus is correctly operating the vehicle (post configuration).

For correctly configuring a vehicle with as little trial-and-error as possible use ArduPilot methodic configurator software. It’s a single purpose software, developed for beginners like yourself.

You can use STM32CubeProgrammer to flash if you’re on Mac its quite easy with that. Try to erase the fc completely before flashing ArduPilot.

You can use STM32CubeProgrammer, but if you find it difficult, the following method can also be used.

First, enter DFU mode by using the button or jumper on the flight controller, then connect the USB cable.

Open INAV Configurator or Betaflight Configurator and go to the Firmware Flasher tab. Then select the local firmware file.
(INAV Configurator is recommended.)

Next, select the correct ArduPilot firmware bl.hex file from your local storage and flash it to the flight controller.

Once the flashing process is complete, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Wait for the flight controller to boot normally, then connect to it again.

For the initial setup and flight tuning, please follow the ArduPilot procedures provided below.

You can try Ardudeck https://ardudeck.com/, it have close functionality to QGroundControl and can reflash the FC. It’s better to avoid speedybee f405 v3 because it lack bdshot support and have some other limitations.
