Hi Everyone.
First off, I just want to say I’m an Arducopter newbie.
I’ve built up a cheap 5" analog quad to try and learn the all aspects of Arducopter before move on to larger builds.
My main parts of the 5" are:
GEPRC Mark 4 clone frame
Xing 2306 1700kv 6S motors
Matek H7a3 FC
HGLRC M100 GPS
Micro Air MTF- 01P (not yet setup)
Cadex Ratel pro
Foxeer Reaper VTX.
I initially started following Chris Rossers Ardupilot tutorial Part 1, until I found this forum and saw the Devs recommended against it. I stopped there and started reading the Ardupilot documents, and going over everything again.
The first test hover had serious visual and audible vibration issues. I landed, and dropped all the recommended rates down 50%. Vibrations were vastly reduced in the next test hover. I went for a minute long flight in stabilized mode.
It fly’s quite well. However It appears I’m still getting some vibration and motor imbalance. It also wants to drift slowly to the rear while in stabilize mode (motor imbalance?)
Can anyone give me any ideas as to what I might change to see an improvement in flight performance? PIDS, etc.?
Or, should I bin it and start over with AMC?
I have a spare Moz 7.5" frame I could build up which should provide a sturdier platform.

Bit of an update. I finally had some time to sit down and go through AMC with the 5”. I had success! Quad flew well in Stab, ALTHOLD and Loiter. It help me a LOT and taught me a lot about the tuning process and Arducopter set up in general. Fantastic resource.
I’ve now decided to swap my 10” from INAV to arducopter, but surprisingly, I’ve run into an issue in the mandatory hardware setup tab. I’m unable to calibrate the magnetometer.

At first, I flashed the standard MatekF405-TE target, and everything set up fine (including Mag)
I then test hovered the drone. I realized I didn’t have Bi-dshot available, so I flashed this MatekF405-TE-bdshot target. I did a full param delete and restarted setup with AMC as I did previously. I went through all the mandatory hardware tabs and everything went well. When it was time to calibrate mag however..
I can click “start mag calibration” but it does not start. Only compass 1 is checked off, and it shows the QMC5883L mag above. I’m getting CompassCalibrator: Cannot start compass thread and Compass calibration failed to start in the msg’s tab. GPS1 is set to Serial 3, ublox @ 115k baud rate. I’ve tried “default” and “relaxed” but I won’t allow me to start calibration with either.
brd_alt_config is set to 1 for the Matek F405HDTE.
Please let me know what changes I might be able to make to be able to calibrate the mag and move forward with the AMC!

Looks like that compass is not supported by that firmware.
Try another firmware, or build one with custom.ardupilot.org or try Arducopter 4.7.0beta4
Fixed. Thank you for the help! I re-flashed the original MatekF405-TE target, which had worked for mag calibration, but I’m having the same issue. It will not allow me to start calibration.
It shows in the MatekF405-TE “features text” AP_COMPASS_QMC5883L_ENABLED
so I’m not sure what’s going on. Is there another target I can try? I don’t see one. If nothing else, I might try Arducopter 4.7
Update: Fixed the calibration issue. I changed GPS1_GNSS_MODE from 1 to 0.
I was able to calibrate the mag successfully.
