Battery size and capacity for 3DR Iris please?

Hello

May I please know the required specifications, including connection, for a replacement battery for a 3DR Iris?

May I please ask the maximum potential size, shape and power specifications for a replacement battery for an 3DR Iris?

I’ve read and contacted people that have used 5000mAh batteries but I do not know what requirements to look for when shopping on-line.

Cheers

Hi the1lemming,

Here you can find the Iris battery information:
store.3drobotics.com/products/iris-battery-pack

The Iris’ battery space is:
W=48mm, L=177mm, H=27mm

Batteries such as the Turnigy 5000mAh 3S are fine up to something like the MaxAmps 5450mAh 3S.

The MaxAmps comes at a premium price so most users I know go for the Turnigy or Zippy 5000mAh.

You need at XT60 connector, so with Hobby King batteries you need to solder that on yourself usually.

Thank you everybody for your replies.

I do have one more question. Seeing as people have reported that a 5000mAh battery is a tight fit within the Iris, is it better to go for a hard shell battery or a soft outer casing?

I’ve seen a few youtubes where LiPo batteries have had disastrous consequences when damaged and charged up.

Use a normal LiPo. The Iris is your hard shell .

Being a bit of a dullard and not wanting to buy the wrong battery, would you be willing to post a link to a site which sells 5000mAh battery that will fit inside an Iris?

Cheers

Uhm, nope. I don’t have an Iris (yet), so I can’t tell for sure.
But if Rogelio tells you the dimensions, I’m pretty certain those are correct.

turnigy 5000 25c lipo from hobbyking will fit, you will have to shorten the wires and solder on a new connector. its very heavy, stock battery is 264g, turnigy 5000 is 402g, but i get 16mins flying with a gopro.

Venom 4000mAh 20C 3S fits fine.

And if money is no object and you want a sexy option, along with XT60 pre-fitted:

May I ask if you use this battery personally and if so, how long it lasts compared to the stock battery?

My Iris purchase is expected to arrive tomorrow, so I’ll be needing some batteries for play time.

Cheers

Does it make a difference if the batteries are 3S or 4S?

Yes, I would stick with 3s

Keep to 3S, apart from the fact 4S weighs more, it won’t necessarily be compatible with all gimbals and FPV gear.

Here is the battery:

and the connector you need to solder on:

You gotta’ get the connector & wire very hot to solder it correctly so now is the time to think about that. I have a cheap Harbor Freight trigger style that I use for the big guage wire. Its the only inexpensive item i have found that will get it hot enough to melt the solder when you have the connector & wire touching to each other.

What does everyone think of this new battery? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__56839__Multistar_High_Capacity_3S_5200mAh_Multi_Rotor_Lipo_Pack.html
Only 10C so 52A constant current draw. Can’t remember the Iris specs off the top of my head, but it seems like it’s less than 52A at full throttle. Battery is way light though at only 311 grams

I went and bought the IRIS this weekend, should be here Friday, I also picked up 3 of these batteries as extra, I’ll report back and let you know since no one else has seem to try them.

What is the minimum LIPO requirements for an IRIS+ ? Is it 11.1 Volt 5100 mah or can we also use 3700 mah
I have this LIPO pack :
hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor … _Pack.html

Can this be used for IRIS+

The original IRIS battery was a 3500mah so yes any 3s battery should work. The problem is that it has to fit into the copter which only is so long, wide and high. The IRIS+ battery is 135x40x25.
Also it needs to have an XT60 connector.
A 3700 battery will only give you less than 10 minutes of flight time without gimbal.
These times will shorten as you charge and discharge the battery.

You can also get the 5100mAh IRIS+ battery for a nice 40 bucks.
